C.P. World History I - 9th GradeNovember 4 - The Warring States Period of China saw chaos and uncertainty never experienced before, prompting the development of the 3 Chinese philosophies: Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. Each philosophy sought to bring peace and order to China.
Apply these philosophies to the present-day by describing what a class would be like if a teacher practiced each of these philosophies. What would the lessons be like? What would the rules be like? Who would be the successful students and who would fail? What would the teacher's personality be like? What kind of learning/subjects would be taught? Answer in about 3 paragraphs, or 1 for each philosophy. November 15 - Athens and Sparta are prime examples of how the ancient Greek city-states, while similar in many ways, could develop into distinct cultures. Answer: -In one paragraph, contrast the two city-states. In what ways there their governments and societies different? -In another paragraph, explain which of the two you would rather live in and why: 1. A militaristic state (with very little freedom, rigid rules and punishments, no self-expression or creativity BUT a very safe environment with little risk of invasion) OR 2. A state with democracy (individuality, education, freedom, BUT little protection from invasion and a constant threat of harm) Answer in about 2-3 paragraphs. January 7 - Roman society was made up of two main social classes of citizens - Plebeians and Patricians. While Patricians enjoyed a higher status and more privileges, both groups were considered citizens of Rome and could vote. In the first paragraph, explain the differences between these two social groups and how life was different for both, especially in terms of political power and privilege. Then, in the second paragraph, analyze the role that social classes have played throughout world history so far in this class. How have social classes been beneficial (or not) to stability and equality? Why are social classes in place? What are some examples of social classes discussed this year in this class so far? Use these examples to illustrate your answers (provide at least 2 specific examples of social classes/castes in previously discussed civilizations). In the third paragraph, explain what types of social classes you think exist today in the United States. How (if at all) are people ranked and how is power distributed today? Who has more influence and privilege and who has less? What groups of people/occupations are at the top and who is at the bottom? Provide specific examples. Then, in the fourth and last paragraph, explain where you think you fall in society and why. What privileges do you have or lack? What power or influence do you have or lack? Do you think your place in society is fair - why or why not? Marking Period 1August 28 - What message do you think the author was trying to send when writing the Story of the Nacirema? How do you think message applies to studying history and other civilizations/cultures? Use 2 examples from the text to support your answer, which should be 2 paragraphs. September 13 - The Epic of Gilgamesh is a complex story, yet it is one of (if not the earliest) work of literature in the history of the world. Judging by the three excerpts read in class, what is the ultimate moral of the story of this poem? Why do you think the Sumerians created a story with this message? October 16 - Explain the difference between the caste system in India and the class system in the United States. And, explain the pros AND cons of a class system AND a caste system (each has at least one pro and one con). Lastly, explain which you think is better and why. |
